Recap |  Box Score |  Notes

Head Coach Stan Joplin

"It was a big win because we protected our home court and we didn't want to fall to 1-3 in the conference. Once we got a lead we played a lot better. We hung in there in the first half and then we made some shots in the second half, got the ball inside and took care of the basketball. Kashif Payne did a nice job defensively putting pressure on the ball and creating opportunities for himself and his teammates."

(on Kashif Payne's play)

"He can be a disruptive force. He can get to the basket and put pressure on the ball. When he puts pressure on the ball defensively it becomes contagious with other players."

(on the defensive pressure with five guards)

"That was probably our best lineup because we were concerned about them shooting threes. They are a good three-point shooting team and we needed to contest their shots because they like to penetrate and kick."

(on passing Harold Anderson on UT's all-time win list with 143 victories)

"It's an honor when anything like this happens and you feel very appreciative about it. It's nice to move in a category right behind Coach Nichols. Down the road it will mean a lot more but tonight's game was about getting a much-needed win."

Freshman guard Kashif Payne

"He tells me to pressure the ball and create problems for the other team and get them out of their offense. On offense he wants me to provide a lot of energy and create easy shots for other players."

"I just wanted to come out and give my team an opportunity to win because we needed this win. I wanted to create easy shots for my teammates with my penetration. I felt like in the first half I was getting in the lane pretty well and I wanted to keep doing that in the second half."

(on playing five guards at times)

"We've done it a few times before and that give us a lot more speed. That allowed us to play better defense and have more energy. I think our defense played a big role in helping us win because we pressured the ball and that allowed us to get out in transition."

Sophomore guard Justin Ingram

(on playing five guards at times)

"It didn't hurt us too much because they were playing perimeter players also. We could match up with them and it made us a lot faster and we able to push the ball up the floor quickly with Kashif. We just went out there and played."

(on shifting over to the shooting guard during games)

"When I'm playing the point my job is to get my teammates the ball in their best positions. When Kashif comes into the game then that's his job and I become a shooting guard and I try to penetrate and kick it out to other players or knock down an open jump shot."

(on Kashif Payne's play)

"He played great tonight with eight assists and one turnover. He does what he does best. I play against him every day in practice and he does that all the time. He's so quick he gets past anybody. He gets into the lane and drops it off or he can score himself."

Ball State Head Coach Tim Buckley

"We talked at length before the game about Toledo turning people over 18 times a game and 10 of those 18 are steals. You can't throw passes 25 feet between players. You have to bring the ball to the receiver and the receiver has to meet the passer. As a whole our perimeter guys didn't take care of the ball the way they needed to. We just have to be stronger with the ball."

(on his team's free throw shooting)

"We did a good job getting to the free throw line in the first half and drove the ball the same way in the second half but we just didn't get there and didn't make our shots when we got to the basket."

Ball State senior forward Terrance Chapman

(on his team's shooting)

"Tonight was a night where the shots weren't falling for us. I should have done a better job making my free throws."

(on the matchup inside)

"I thought I did a good job and got fouled a lot but I did a very poor job with my free throws. I felt I could score inside but it worked to their advantage because I didn't make my free throws."

Ball State senior forward Skip Hicks

(on the physical play) \ "Both teams were playing hard and the officials let the teams play for the most part. When that happens more chaos is bound to happen."

(on guarding Keith Triplett)

"He's a good player but I feel I can guard just about anybody one-on-one. That's just my approach to the game. If a player makes a few shots then I try to get a hand up and try to make him uncomfortable because I know he can't do that for 40 minutes."
