YORKTOWN, IN - Toledo registered a fourth-place finish at Ball State's Cardinal Classic today after shooting a 312 at the par-72, 6,164-yard Players Club Course in Yorktown, IN. The Rockets (619) equalled their fourth-place from a year ago but bettered last year's two-round total by seven strokes. Western Michigan (581) captured the tournament title and was followed by Ferris State (597) and Eastern Kentucky (618).
Freshman Katy Barrett led the Rockets by tying for 13th place at nine-over par 153 (77-76). Finishing in a tie for 19th place at 155 were sophomore Natalie Storck (79-76) and freshman Joanna Periversoff (74-81). Sophomores Kim Kester (77-79--156) and Rachel Thomas (79-83--162) finished in 24th and 41st-place ties, respectively. Freshman Katie Myos competed as an individual but was forced to withdraw after three holes due to a wrist injury after shooting a 76 on Saturday.
"It's good to get a top-five finish under our belts this early in the season and it's also nice that we were able to surpass our score from last year," Nicole Hollingsworth said. "I'm very encouraged by our play and I think we will only get better with experience."
Toledo returns to action next weekend with a trip to East Lansing, MI for Michigan State's Mary Fossum Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 18-19.
