TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo baseball team (8-17, 2-5 MAC) dropped the opener of its three-game MAC series with Central Michigan (14-13, 3-1 MAC) by a 16-2 margin at Scott Park.
Chippewas' starter T.J. Johnson (3-1) kept the Rocket hitters off-balance for a majority of the game, allowing seven hits and two unearned runs with 11 strikeouts in eight innings. Junior Kurt Woeste (1-4) took the loss for Toledo after surrendering nine runs on nine hits in five innings of action.
Both teams jumped out of the gate quickly, as each tallied a pair of runs in their first at-bats. Unfortunatley for the Rockets, the two runs would be all the offense they could muster against Johnson, while CMU scored 14 unanswered runs and cruised to today's victory.
Central Michigan scored two runs in the first, one in the second, three in the fourth, nine in the sixth and one in the eighth to hand Toledo its first home loss of the season. The Chippewas' Jim Geldhof led their offensive charge by going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and five RBI.
Sophomore C Nick Lance accounted for both Rockets' runs with a two-run RBI triple in the first frame. Lance (2-for-4, 2 RBI) led the offense with UT's only multi-hit contest.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow in a 1:00 p.m. contest. The series finale will take place on Sunday, April 4, also at 1:00 p.m.
