Indian River, OH - Toledo slipped to fourth place today after shooting a 321 in the final round of the 2004 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship at the rain-soaked Walden Ponds Golf Course. The Rockets finished with a three-day total of 950 and were led by senior Sara Boogaard, who tied for fifth place at 230 (75-76-79).
Following the day's action, Boogaard received first-team All-MAC honors in addition to being named the MAC's Sportswoman of the Year. It was the third straight year a UT golfer received at least a share of the honor.
Senior Helene Thoman was the second-best finisher for the Rockets in an 11th-place tie at 235 (77-77-81) followed by senior Breanne Hall in 14th place at 236 (79-79-78), senior Kristin Uhoda tied for 29th place at 252 (87-79-86) and redshirt freshman Kim Kester tied for 31st place at 253 (87-83-83). Hall also earned second-team All-MAC honors for the third straight year.
"The conditions were very difficult with rain throughout the day and I thought we responded well to the adversity," said Head Coach Nicole Hollingsworth. "We had a lot of highlights this season and I thought we improved throughout the year. Our seniors really had a great spring for us and I'm glad they were able to finish their careers on a strong note."
Kent State won the team title for the sixth straight year with a score of 902 and was led by medalist Gabby Wedding. The junior was the only golfer to finish under par as she shot a one-under 215 for the tournament. Also contributing to KSU's victory was runner-up Becky Wood who shot a 224 for a second-place finish, and Martina Gillen, who shot a 228 to finish in fourth place.
Western Michigan was the runner-up, as they shot a team total of 920, which was their lowest total ever (946, 2003). Three Broncos finished in the top 10, as Jenna Walter and Lindsay Dunigan finished in a tie for fifth place, while Erin Thorne finished in tenth place.
The 18-stroke deficit to Kent State is the narrowest margin that the Golden Flashes have ever won the tournament by. Other records of note that were achieved in 2004 was Wedding's second round score of 69, which tied her own mark as the lowest round ever shot in the MAC Championship. Wedding's round helped her establish the lowest-ever tournament score, besting the previous mark of 218 which was set in 2001 by Gillen.
