TOLEDO, OH - Toledo pounded out 10 hits and received a solid pitching performance from freshman Greg Gompf as the Rockets defeated Wayne State, 6-2, in non-conference action at Scott Park.
With the victory, the Rockets snap their four-game losing skid and improve to 9-20 on the season, while the Warriors fall to 15-19.
Gompf (2-3) picked up the win scattering two runs on six hits, while striking out eight Warriors in six innings of work. Senior Derek Overcashier tossed two scoreless innings of relief duty, while classmate Raul Lopez pitched a perfect ninth.
Toledo took the lead in its initial at-bat on a RBI single by sophomore 3B Dan Stong, scoring senior RF Aaron Rouser. Rouser led off the game with a single and proceeded to steal second base and advance to third on a throwing error by the WSU catcher Nate Przygocki.
The Rockets added to their lead with single runs in the second on a RBI single by freshman Nate Pretzlaf and in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by senior DH Doug Yoder.
Wayne State finally broke through with a run in the fifth on a RBI single by Bobby Marten. The Warriors then cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze by Przygocki, but could get no closer.
Toledo put the game away in the eighth, tallying three runs on a RBI double by senior Shawn Dobson and run-producing singles by Dan Ruth and Yoder to make the final 6-2.
Dan Ruth (2-for-4, two runs scored) and Dobson (2-for-4, RBI , runs scored) led the way for UT's offensive attack, followed by Yoder (1-for-2, 2 RBI).
Toledo returns to action on Saturday, April 17, when the Rockets play host to Grand Valley State. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Scott Park.
