TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (9-21) dropped the opener of its three-game non-conference series with Grand Valley State (28-12) by a 13-6 margin Saturday afternoon at Scott Park.
The Rockets fell behind early as the Lakers jumped out to a 9-1 lead to chase starter J.R. Duffey (2-4) in the top of the third inning. With two outs and a runner on second, a throwing error by Toledo 3B Dan Stong opened the floodgates. The next six GVSU batters recorded hits to help establish the eight-run cushion. All seven runs in the frame were unearned.
Toledo cut the lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the third on a RBI single up the middle by senior CF Sean Dobson, scoring Stong, who reached on a double.
Grand Valley State added single runs in the seventh and the eighth to push its lead to 11-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, freshman reserve C Dustin Sommer drilled a three-run home run over the wall in left for his first collegiate round-tripper.
The Lakers tallied two more unearned runs in the ninth, before a sacrifice fly by senior LF/RHP Shawn Hurst made the final, 13-6.
GVSU's starter Jon Micoff (8-1) picked up the victory. Micoff allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. Duffey (2-4) was tagged with the loss, surrendering nine runs (two earned) on 10 hits in 2.2 innings of action.
Stong led the UT offense with his fourth three-hit game of the season. Dobson was the lone other Rocket with at least two hits.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow in a noon doubleheader at Scott Park.
