Toledo, OH - Toledo (1-3) utilized strong serving and a balanced offensive attack to post its first victory of the season with a 3-0 (30-18, 30-20, 30-19) victory over LaSalle (3-3) at Savage Hall in the third annual Clarion Hotel Westgate Rocket Volleyball Classic.
Three Rockets registered double-figure point totals led by sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Culver with 18 points (team-high 15 kills, one ace and two total blocks). "We were challenged in a lot of different areas tonight and we were able to rise to that challenge," UT Head Coach Kent Miller said. "We stressed to the team the importance of closing out games and when we had the opportunity to close LaSalle out of each game we did that. This was a big step for our team."
The Rockets registered a .365 team attack percentage with senior setter Carrie McCaw notching 43 assists, while limiting the Explorers to a .110 attack mark. UT also dominated the serving department by registering 14 aces compared to LaSalle's three.
"We did a nice job serving and putting pressure on our opponents," Miller said. "We did a lot of positive things out there and this gives us something to build on."
