TOLEDO, OH - The Ohio Bobcats (29-19, 11-10 MAC) scored six runs in the ninth inning to defeat Toledo (20-24, 6-15 MAC), 7-5, in the opening game of a four-game series at Scott Park on Friday afternoon.
Trailing 5-1 heading into its final at-bat, Ohio sent 10 batters to the plate against two Rocket pitchers scoring six runs on two hits. The Bobcats were aided by a two-run single by Ben Crabtree and also benefited from a pair of UT errors, two walks and a hit batsmen to capture the opening game.
Toledo scored the game's first game in the second on a RBI single up the middle by junior Chris Arvay, scoring classmate Aaron Rouser, who led off the frame with a single.
The Rockets pushed their lead to 3-0 in the third on a two-run home run by junior Mitch Maier, his team-leading eighth of the season. Senior Taylor Eckel led off the inning with a single and scored on the round-tripper by Maier.
After Ohio cut the lead to 3-1 in the fifth on a RBI groundout by Dan Lungsford, Toledo again pushed its lead back to three runs, 4-1, on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze by Arvay.
Toledo finished off its scoring tallying a single run in the seventh on a wild pitch by OU starter Shaun Peet. Dobson, who singled to lead off the frame, advanced all the way around the bases on wild pitches and set the stage for the heroics in the ninth for the Bobcats.
The Midnight Blue and Gold pounded out 10 hits in the contest with three different Rockets (Dan Stong, Dobson and Arvay) collecting multiple hits.
Sophomore reliever Kurt Woeste (3-5) was tagged with the loss for the Midnight Blue and Gold. The second hurler used by the Rockets was hit for two unearned runs runs on one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Classmate J.R. Duffey was again the hard-luck starter for UT throwing 8.1 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
OU's Peet (4-0) picked up the victory. He threw eight innings giving up five runs on 10 hits. Reliever Aaron Smigleski threw a perfect ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at Scott Park starting at 1:00 p.m.
