Rockets Split MAC Twinbill with Ball State

Toledo, OH - Toledo (11-34, 5-17 MAC) split its doubleheader this afternoon with Ball State (13-24-1, 6-13-1) by posting a 3-1 victory in the opener before falling by a 4-1 margin in the nightcap.
Sophomore Kim Pettitt (6-20) notched her third straight victory in the first game, allowing one run and six hits in a complete-game effort. Quincy Duran (7-14) took the loss for Ball State allowing three unearned runs and three hits in two innings.
The Rockets broke on top early by tallying all three of their runs in the second inning. A bases-loaded walk to freshman 3B Audrina Marler scored UT's first run and senior 2B Vicki Nelson delivered a two-out two-run single to left field for a 3-0 advantage.
Pettitt then allowed Ball State to plate its only run in the top of the fourth but was able to keep the Cardinals at bay the rest of the way.
In the second game, the combination of CF Kris Burdine and SS Katie Shea gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead through five innings. After Burdine tripled to lead off the third inning, Shea's single to left plated the first run of the game. In the fifth, Burdine single to lead off the frame and scored when Shea doubled to center field.
The Rockets appeared ready to launch a comeback when junior RF Amanda Chiancone's single plated Pettitt to draw UT within a run.
The Cardinals rebounded though with two runs in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.
Sophomore Keri Perkins (5-14) was the losing pitcher for UT, allowing 10 hits and four runs (two earned) in seven innings. BSU's Cortney Winger (6-7) earned the win by scattering six hits and allowing one run in seven innings.
Sophomore SS Gina Muratori led the Rockets offensively in the doubleheader with four hits in six at-bats.
The two teams will close out their three-game series as well as the 2003 campaign with a single game on Sunday, May 4 at 1:00 p.m. A brief pre-game ceremony will be held prior to the contest to honor the Rockets' two seniors, Tiffany Edgar and Jenny Schaaf.
