Rockets Blast Past Cleveland State, 7-1

TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo (17-22) ran its non-conference winning streak to 10 straight Wednesday afternoon defeating Cleveland State, 7-1, at Scott Park.
Seven of the nine Rocket starters earned a hit and scored a run against the Vikings (7-27). Junior's Mitch Maier and Jarrod Resendez drove in two runs apiece to lead the Rockets offensively.
Toledo took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off CSU starter Mike Ochwat. Resendez and senior Taylor Eckel led off the frame with back-to-back walks and were driven in on a record-tying double to left-center by Maier, who tied the school record for career doubles with 39 set by Don Whiting (1978-81). The Midnight Blue and Gold finished off the scoring as Maier crossed the plate on a single thru the left side by junior Shawn Hurst.
The Rockets extended their lead to 4-0 in the third on senior J.R. Foust's second home run of the season off Ochwat.
Cleveland State answered with its lone run in the seventh on a RBI single by pinch-hitter Doug Besozzi.
Toledo finished off the scoring tallying three runs in the eighth on a two-run hit by Resendez and a RBI single by junior Aaron Rouser to make the final, 7-1.
Sophomore Kurt Woeste (2-4) earned the victory with 3.1 innings of relief of UT starter Raul Lopez, who went the first 3.1 innings. Senior Ian Baltzer (1.2 innings) and sophomore Ben Lovell (0.2) finished off the victory for the Rockets.
Ochwat (1-2) was tagged with the loss for the Vikings, throwing 7.1 innings surrendering five runs on four hits.
Toledo (3-13 MAC) returns to action this weekend when it hosts Ball State (10-6 MAC) on Friday-Sunday, May 2-5. Friday's game begins at 3:00 p.m., Saturday's doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday's finale at 2:00 p.m.
