Portland, OR - Toledo (7-1) suffered its first loss of the season this afternoon with a 3-2 (30-24, 32-30, 27-30, 31-33, 17-15) defeat to Portland (5-3) at the Nike Portland Invitational. The Rockets' setback snaps their school record for wins to start a season at seven.
"I was happy with how we rebounded after starting out the match slowly," Toledo Head Coach Kent Miller said. "We did a lot of nice things out on the court and every game was a battle after the first game of the match. We can't let opportunities to win matches like this get away from us and this is something we will need to learn from."
Seniors Heidi Neumeister (career-high 26 kills, .293 ATK%) and Jessica Buck (20 kills, .244 ATK%) paced the Rockets offensively, while senior Kacy Stevens collected a match-high 62 assists. Senior Natalie Mash collected a match-high seven blocks and senior Becky Radomski garnered a team-high 18 digs.
"Heidi (Neumeister) and Jessica (Buck) really attacked well for us, and Kacy (Stevens) did a great job setting," Miller said. "I was also pleased with our blocking because that's an area we've really been trying to improve in."
Toledo will return to action later today for a matchup with No. 14 UCLA (5-3) in its final match of the tournament.
