TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (9-20-1) opened its home season in fine fashion with a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader over Youngstown State (7-14). The Rockets took control early in both contests en route to 8-2 and 5-1 victories.
In the opener, freshman Jessica Horn and senior Kalika Stavroulakis each slugged a pair of doubles to stake Toledo to a 5-0 lead after three innings. Three other Rockets - senior Laurie Linton, senior Deanna House and freshman Crystal Rizzuto - each registered two hits as part of UT's 12-hit attack.
Freshman Kim Pettitt (4-10) registered the victory for Toledo and at one point retired 13 straight Penguins between the first and fifth innings en route to a five-hit complete game effort.
The nightcap was similar to the opener as the Rockets exploded for four runs in the first inning. Six of UT's first seven batters reached base in the frame to provide sophomore pitcher Courtney Winslow (2-1) all the runs she would need. Winslow allowed just one unearned run in the contest and pitched out of several jams as the Penguins left 11 runners on base.
Linton paced UT's balanced offense with two hits.
"It was important for us to get out to early leads in both games," Head Coach Michelle Fagnant said. "We had some very timely hitting and it allowed our pitchers to relax a little bit on the mound. I also thought our defense and baserunning was solid and played a key factor in our victories."
The Rockets will return to action tomorrow afternoon with a single game vs. Oakland University at Scott Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
