MUNCIE, IN -
Toledo (4-13, 2-3 MAC) suffered a 13-1 defeat at Ball State (11-11, 3-2) today in the opener of a four-game series in Muncie, IN this weekend.
Cardinals' starter Bryan Bullington (4-2) retired the first nine batters he faced en route to fanning 11 Rockets and allowing just four hits in eight innings of work. Sophomore Nick Szczur (2-3) took the loss for the Rockets after allowing 10 hits and nine runs (eight earned) in 4.1 innings of work.
Ball State jumped on the board early in the contest with two runs in the first, two in the second, one in the fourth and four in the fifth to take a 9-0 lead. The Cardinals' Matt Deckman led BSU's offensive charge by going a perfect 5-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
Sophomore C Mitch Maier paced UT's offense with two hits, and sophomore RF Jarrod Resendez accounted for the Rockets' lone run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.
The Cardinals and the Rockets will continue their weekend series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow and a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday.
