Rocket Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader with Wright State

Toledo, OH - The University of Toledo softball team split a twinbill with the Wright State Raiders Thursday, winning game two 2-1 in eight innings, and losing the first match-up 5-0.
Freshman Cortney Winslow's single to center in the bottom of the eighth inning scored sophomore Deanna House from second giving the Midnight Blue and Gold a split with the Raiders (18-12) at chilly Scott Park.
Toledo tied the score at 1-1 in the third inning on a WSU error. Junior left fielder Laurie Linton advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a throwing error by the WSU first baseman to knot the score at one.
The Rockets got a tremendous effort from junior hurler Colette McMasters, who improved to 5-6 on the season with the win. McMasters limited the Raiders to six hits over eight innings, while striking out six and picked up her team-leading 10th complete game in 12 starts. WSU's Kristin Bultinick (3-4) was equally as impressive, fanning seven Rockets over 7.2 innings, despite getting tagged with the loss.
In game one, Wright State starter Sheila Hess limited the Midnight Blue and Gold to two hits and tossed a shutout to pick up her sixth win of the season. She also struck out a season-high nine Rockets. UT starter Kristy Kassotis (4-6) took the loss, despite striking out six and not allowing a walk.
The Rockets were hindered by shaky defense in the first game, as they committed four errors.
After the Raiders plated a run in the fourth, WSU tallied four, fifth-innings runs behind two UT errors to seal the victory.
Linton collected both Rocket hits, including her sixth double of the season.The Uniontown, OH native led UT today with three hits.
Toledo is now 13-15 on the season, and remains 1-3 in the Mid-American Conference. Next up for the Rockets, a conference doubleheader as UT hosts Ohio on Friday, April 6. First pitch from Scott Park is at 2:00 p.m.
