Baseball Swept By Bowling Green in Doubleheader

BOWLING GREEN, OH - Toledo (19-21, 5-9 MAC) dropped both ends of a doubleheader this afternoon at Bowling Green (27-10, 14-4 MAC). The Falcons pulled out a 13-12 victory in the first game before registering a 22-10 triumph in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Rockets trailed 12-6 heading into the seventh and final inning before rallying to tie the contest. The Rockets opened the frame by loading the bases with none out on singles by sophomore 1B Phil Pilewski and sophomore 2B J.D. Foust in addition to redshirt freshman 3B Shawn Hurst being hit by a pitch. Pilewski then scored on a passed ball and freshman SS Chris Arvay walked to load the bases again.

Sophomore pinch-hitter Doug Zorne then grounded into what appeared to be a rally-killing double play. But redshirt freshman LF Joel Baas reached on an infield single and senior RF Andy Stetka walked to load the bases. Junior CF Tony Miller followed with a bases-clearing three-run double to bring the Rockets within a run. Freshman C Mitch Maier tied the contest with a single up the middle. After Maier moved up to second on a wild pitch, Pilewski was intentionally walked. Foust ended the inning by grounding into a fielder's choice.

The Falcons won the contest in the bottom of the seventh on Kelly Hunt's bases-loaded single. BG loaded the bases on a one-out triple by catcher Tim Newell. The Rockets then loaded the bases with a pair of intentional walks to set up a force play. But Hunt foiled the Rockets' strategy with his drive to right field which hit just below the top of the fence.

In the second game, Bowling Green jumped on UT early with nine runs in the first and six in the second for a 15-0 lead.

The closest the Rockets came the remainder of the contest was within 17-9 in the fifth inning.

Miller led Toledo offensively during the doubleheader with nine RBI.

The two teams will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday at Scott Park at 2:00 p.m.
