JONESBORO, AR -
Toledo (2-5) opened its 10-day spring-break trip with a 3-2 setback to NAIA power Willams Baptist (8-4) in a game played on the campus of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, AR. The Rockets will face the host Indians on Saturday and Sunday before facing Louisville on Tuesday and Wednesday, Mar. 13-14 and Xavier on Friday-Sunday, Mar. 16-18.
Starting pitcher Shawn Wilson (1-2) suffered the loss for the Rockets, despite fanning a career-high 13 batters in a complete-game effort.
Wilson allowed just two hits over the first five innings before Williams Baptist broke through with a three-run sixth. SS Benji Stahl reached on a one-out single and then scored on LF Eric Newell's triple to right center. After Newell scored on a wild pitch, 2B David Box doubled down the right-field line to keep the rally going. Box scored on a single from DH Loren Harlow.
The Rockets started to rally, though, in the seventh. Junior CF Tony Miller led off with a walk and stole second. After sophomore SS J.D. Foust grounded out to second, junior 3B Mike Meinhart walked and sophomore DH Phil Pilewski plated Miller with an RBI single to right center. Sophomore 1B Roger Hernandez grounded into a double play to end the threat with Meinhart standing at third base.
UT plated another run in the eighth. Redshirt freshman LF Joel Baas tripled to right center with one out and freshman RF Jarrod Resendez walked. Baas scored when freshman Mitch Maier, pinch-hitting for sophomore 2B Taylor Eckel, reached on a fielder's choice.
