Second in a series of reports from UT track star Paul Sehzue from the Olympics in Sydney, Australia
Friday, Sept. 8
Yesterday we were formally welcomed to the Olympic village with song and Aboriginal dance. The song was titled "G'day, G'day." It was a poor imitation of the popular song, "We are the World". The dance was quite interesting. Remember the Fosters beer commercial (Australian for beeeah[beer])? There was a sound murmuring in the background, that sounded similar to a wubba-wubba sound. Well I heard the instrument that produced this sound first hand. It is called a "didgeridoo." While the instrument was being played, the local elementary school children mimicked local animals of the area. After the song and dance concluded, our flags were raised in Olympic Village. The team signed autographs and took pictures. I have to go for now.
I would like you to get a visual of how tight security is here at the village. It is similar to a white-collar prison, only everything imaginable is inside. Barbed-wire fences all over the place. One cannot exit one section of the village without a badge that was issued upon arrival.
Sincerely,
Paul
