TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo softball team (8-12, 2-1 MAC) split its doubleheader this afternoon versus Eastern Michigan (12-13, 1-2 MAC) by rallying for a 2-1 victory in the opener before falling by a 2-0 margin in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Rockets fell behind 1-0 in the first inning but put runners on base in four of the first five innings despite being held hitless. Freshman Aimee Frickle broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth. After sophomore Kalika Stavroulakis sacrificed her to third, Frickle scored on Tracy Riepenhoff's suicide squeeze bunt.
In the bottom of the seventh, Rocket catcher Laurie Nagel reached on a two-out infield hit. Nagel scored the winning run by coming around all the bases when EMU third baseman Kelly Ivie threw away Frickle's grounder.
Sophomore Colette McMasters (4-5) earned the win by allowing just one unearned run in her complete-game effort.
In the second game, the Eagles broke a scoreless tie by plating a pair of runs in the fifth inning.
"This whole series was characteristic of how I'd like to see us play every game," UT Softball Coach Michelle Fagnant said. "Our starters performed the way we need them to and our defense was strong for the most part.
"We just need to start attacking the ball more offensively and be more aggressive at the plate when we get runners on base."
Fagnant was also pleased with how her team performed against one of the MAC's solid softball programs.
"This series shows us that we can compete against anyone in the MAC," she said. "Eastern is a solid team and if we keep playing the way we are, we'll contend for a spot in the MAC Tournament."
The Rockets return to action again on Monday, April 3 with a doubleheader at Ohio State.
