TOLEDO -
University of Toledo men's golf junior Richard Elliott (Port Rush, Ireland-Coloraine College) fired a third round 74 and a final round 76 to finish tied with 10 other players for 23rd place at the NCAA Championships at Hazeltime National Golf Club in Chaska, MN last weekend.
Though the 16th-place Rockets missed advancing to the final two rounds by one place, Elliott was one of nine individuals not on the top 15 teams that qualified for the final two rounds with his double-round total of 150. He finished with a four-round total of 300, which was only four shots off of 10th place.
Other strong finishers at the NCAA included senior Chuck Radabaugh (Findlay, OH-Liberty Benton) and freshman Alan Murray (Dublin, Ireland) both tied for 65th place with two-round totals of 154. Tim Rice (Limerick, Ireland-Crescent College) and Kevin Kornowa (Toledo, OH-Start) also competed for the Rockets, placing fourth and fifth on the team respectively. The Rockets shot a combined 613 (308-305) (+37) for the first two rounds.
UT arrived at the NCAA Championships through an at-large bid following the team's fifth-place finish at the Regional meet at Ohio State. This was the first time that the Rocket golf team advanced to the NCAA Championships since 1964.
Over the course of the 1998-99 season, UT placed in the top three in six of the 14 tournaments it played. The Rockets' sole win came in October at the Legends of Indiana tournament as UT outlasted 18 other teams for the crown. UT finished second to Kent for the second straight year at the MAC Tournament, before receiving its invitation to the NCAA Regionals in Columbus.
