Andy Hill is in his second season serving as the graduate assistant coach for the Toledo men’s golf program. Hills assists in all facets of UT’s program, including daily practice preparation, tournament planning and travel, course strategy, assisting with team workouts, planning of alumni events, fundraising and creating a monthly newsletter for alumni and supporters of the program. He is also responsible for the preparation and execution of the Inverness Intercollegiate during the fall, setting up the logistics of the event and assisting with on-course strategy for the Rockets.
“Andy has been a great addition to our program,” head coach Jamie Broce said. “He loves coaching and spends a lot of time working to be the best. I rely on him a lot to be a sounding board, to run ideas by and get a second opinion. Two heads are definitely better than one and he’s a good sounding board for that. Andy is in charge of a lot of the paperwork in our office, as well as creating the alumni/donor newsletter and designing practices. He’s definitely coming along well, and I think we complement each other very nicely.“
This past fall, Toledo claimed the team title at the season-opening Notre Dame Kickoff Challenge. The Rockets shot a 36-hole score of 567 (282-285) to capture the team crown at the second-annual event. UT’s 36-hole total is the lowest in school history, surpassing the previous low mark of 568 during the opening two rounds at the NYX Hoosier Invitational on April 11, 2015. UT dominated the competition and had three golfers in the Top Four and six in the Top 10 to coast to the 12-shot victory.
In addition, senior Otto Black was named the MAC Golfer of the Week on two occasions during the fall season.
During Hill’s first year with the UT program, the Midnight Blue & Gold fell only eight strokes short of its first conference title since 2004 and finished runner-up at the MAC Championships. Senior Chris Selfridge was named the MAC Golfer of the Year, becoming the second Rocket to earn the league’s top honor. Black joined Selfridge on the first-team All-MAC squad, making the Rockets the only team to have more than one golfer collect first-team all-league accolades.
Selfridge was tabbed first-team All-MAC for the third-straight year, while Black earned first-team laurels for the first time after being selected second-team all-conference the previous two years.
Selfridge led the MAC with a career-best 72.4 stroke average and was ranked as high as No. 98 in the World Amateur Golf rankings, while Black finished fourth in the conference with a collegiate-low 73.6 average.
As a team, the Rockets posted four Top 5 finishes in 2014-15, culminating with a championship at the Georgetown Invitational. UT took advantage of freshman Stephen Watts, Selfridge and Black finishing in a third-place tie at the Georgetown Invite to post a sizable 14-stroke advantage over the competition.
Individually, four student-athletes were named MAC Golfer of the Week on seven occasions, including Selfridge who captured the league’s top honor a school-record four times.
In addition, senior Mike Lancaster and Selfridge was selected to the Academic All-MAC Team.
Prior to arriving at UT, Hill worked as a tournament intern for the Western Golf Association/Evans Scholars Foundation. He assisted with the Western Junior, Western Amateur and BMW Championships for six months and controlled the credentials for the BMW Championship, helping security manage risks around the tournament. Hill also aided in daily tournament tasks that included live scoring, player pairing groups, tee time schedules, and course set-up.
Hill comes to UT following four years at DePauw University in Greencastle, IN. He competed in 28 rounds as a member of the Tigers golf team and registered an 80.6 stroke average.
Hill’s most extensive action occurred as a junior when he participated in seven tournaments and posted a 79.3 stroke average. He also fired a collegiate-best score of 73 in the third round of the Camp Lejeune Scarlet Consolation as a junior and tallied his top finish when he tied for 14th place at 11-over par during the Denison Fall Classic.
While attending DePauw, Hill also served as an operations assistant for the PGA of America during the 2012 PGA Championship and worked on the Grounds Committee for the 2013 & 2014 Waste Management Phoenix Open.
He was also a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and spent time as a junior high school coach at the Sacred Heart School.
A native of Winnetka, IL, Hill was a three-year letterwinner in golf at Loyola Academy and won two tournament titles as a senior. He also graduated Cum Laude.
Hill graduated in 2014 from DePauw with a degree in economics and is pursuing his master’s degree in business administration.
