Melody Jebiwot Wins the 5000m Individual Title on Day One of MAC Championships

Rockets are tied for third with 23 total points after the first day of competition
MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – Melody Jebiwot won the individual title in the 5000m on day one of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. on Friday.
Jebiwot crossed the finish line with a final time of 16:03.46, just edging out Akron's second-place finisher by .40 seconds (16:03.86). This is Jebiwot's first individual crown at the conference championship.
Hannah Ielfield followed behind in the 5000m with a fourth-place finish (16:24.38) while Bella Earl also scored, finishing in eighth (16:39.29).
The Rockets distance medley relay squad of Laura Acuna, Sydney Stepanovich, Lauren Zanotelli and Lianna Surtz recorded a silver medal finish with a time of 11:26.61. Their time is the second-fastest in program history.
In the qualifying events, three Rockets advanced to the mile final on Saturday. Dorcas Kiptanui won the prelim event with a mark of 4:46.86. Gabby Phelan took fourth (4:48.87) while Alex Bauer recorded fifth overall (4:48.96) to move on to tomorrow's final event.
Freshman Harper Brighty also advanced to Saturday after recording a personal best time of 2:13.01 in the 800m.
The Rockets close out day one with 23 total points and tied for third with UMass and Bowling Green.
