TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team was locked in another close game, but the Rockets made big plays down the stretch to pull away from Eastern Michigan, 62-51 at Savage Arena on Saturday.
The Rockets (13-10, 7-5 MAC) battled through a first half that saw two ties and four lead changes, leading by one at the break. After the Eagles (11-13, 4-9 MAC) made it a one-possession game in the third quarter, Toledo delivered its best quarter of the day in the fourth, out-scoring the Eagles, 19-11. EMU never tied nor took the lead in final 19:34 of the game.
The Rockets finished with a 40-35 rebounding advantage, including 22-15 in the second half. The Rockets also reduced their turnovers and won the turnover battle, 16-13. UT also held a significant advantage at the free throw line, with 15 foul-line makes to four.
Quoting Head Coach Ginny Boggess
"I'd like to recognize playing for 'Rockets for the Cure' and celebrating breast cancer survivors, and thank you to everyone that came out and wore pink. I knew the game was going to be a battle. I loved our effort and our toughness down the stretch. You could see our players' frustration with themselves, especially in the third quarter when we did some uncharacteristic things, but I really saw us mature and grow up. We wanted to win the battle of the boards and protect the paint. Sisi Eleko from Eastern Michigan is a great player and gave us a great game, and they came in with a great gameplan. Appreciate the sixth man for helping us out today."
