Rockets rallied for 73-72 victory over Falcons in January
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo men's basketball team (13-12, 7-5 MAC) looks to build momentum following Wednesday's 90-79 win at Western Michigan when it visits Bowling Green (15-10, 6-6 MAC) on Saturday, Feb. 14 in this season's second edition of the Battle of I-75 sponsored by Fremont Credit Union. Tip-off time is set for 5:00 p.m. in the Stroh Center on ESPN+.
The Rockets rallied late for a 73-72 victory in their first meeting against the Falcons this season. Leroy Blyden Jr. hit a game-winning three-pointer with 7.7 seconds left to cap off a comeback from a 71-64 deficit with 4:36 remaining. Seniors Kyler Vanderjagt and Sean Craig both knocked down threes down the stretch to put the Rockets in position to win.
Sonny Wilson led six Rockets in double figures with 18 points in Wednesday's double-digit win over the Broncos. Also scoring in double digits were Austin Parks (17 pts.), Craig (13 pts.), Jaylan Ouwinga (11 pts.), Blyden (10 pts.), and Mynor Strong (10 pts.).
Wilson's back-to-back baskets gave Toledo 30-27 lead with just over eight minutes left in the first half for an advantage it never relinquished. Blyden's triple right before intermission gave the Rockets a 50-41 cushion. WMU trimmed its deficit to five early in the second half but couldn't get any closer.
Toledo is led by the backcourt duo of Wilson (17.2 ppg) and Blyden (16.0 ppg) along with the frontcourt tandem of Craig (12.0 ppg) and Parks (11.5 ppg). Blyden leads all MAC freshmen with 16.0 ppg, while Wilson is dishing out a team-high 4.7 apg. Parks ranks second in the MAC with a team-high 62.9 FG%, while Craig ranks fourth with a team-best 7.7 rpg.
Bowling Green is also entering Saturday's contest with a victory following a 68-52 win at Northern Illinois. The Falcons are 8-5 at home this season with a 2-3 ledger in league play.
Javonte Campbell tops the MAC in league play with 22.2 ppg. Sam Towns (11.9 ppg), Mayar Wol (11.7 ppg), and Josiah Shackelford (11.6 ppg) are also scoring in double digits. with Towns grabbing a team-high 6.5 rpg.
