TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball program has added Trey Wright as its new assistant coach, Head Coach Rob Reinstetle announced on Tuesday.
Wright joins the program after spending five years with the Rockets (2020-24) as a player, beginning when Reinstetle took the helm as Toledo's head coach, and was most recently the assistant coach/field coordinator at NAIA program Ave Maria University (Fla.) for one year. With the Rockets' staff, Wright will work with the catchers and assist with hitting.
"I couldn't be happier to announce Trey Wright as our newest assistant coach," Reinstetle said. "Trey was a very good player and fiery competitor. He has a maturity and understanding of the game that always led me to believe he would be a great coach. Since graduating, he's branched out and started his coaching career, and I'm so excited to have him back in the program. He is organized, driven and a very energetic person to be around, all of which are outstanding traits to have in a young coach, and the reasons why we brought him back into the program. Trey understands our culture and way of doing things, and will do a fantastic job connecting with and mentoring our catching group."
In his season with Ave Maria's staff, Wright helped the Gyrenes to a 30-27 overall record and a 15-13 record in conference play. The Gyrenes reached the NAIA National Championship Opening Round with an at-large bid, where they won two games against nationally ranked opponents to reach the championship game. Ave Maria finished with their fourth winning season in school history while playing the 12th-toughest schedule in the NAIA.
As a player, Wright appeared in 137 games in a Toledo uniform, collecting 110 hits with 12 home runs, 74 RBIs, 17 doubles and 48 walks. He appeared in the field as both a catcher and an infielder. Wright made just one error between the 2022 and 2023 seasons while totaling 451 putouts and 41 assists.
"I'm really excited to be coming back to Toledo, and to have a chance to work with Coach Rob and the rest of his staff," said Wright. "I have heard great things about this year's team, and being a former player makes this move that much more special. This program has really started to make a name for itself and I'm excited to be a part of it once again."
Wright graduated from UT with a degree in management. He was a two-time Academic All-MAC selection while at Toledo.
