Hungary natives to begin two rounds of stroke play in Edison, N.J. on Saturday
TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo men's golfers Bence Bertenyi (Budapest, Hungary) and Bence Kotel (Tihany, Hungary) will travel to the East Coast this week to compete in the United States Golf Association's U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship. The duo will compete in the national tournament at the Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J. with The Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield, N.J. also serving as a stroke-play co-host.
Bertenyi and Kotel qualified for the event last summer by shooting a 12-under par 60 at the Oasis Golf Club on August 26, 2024 in Loveland, Ohio. Bertenyi registered a hole-in-one during the round.
A freshman, Bertenyi ranked third on the Rockets with a 73.2 stroke average over 33 rounds in his first season of collegiate competition. He posted a seven-under par 206 to win the Purdue Fall Individual title and tied for 10th place at the Mid-American Conference Championships.
Kotel posted a 74.5 scoring mark in 17 rounds this past season. His top finish was a fifth-place showing with a one-under par 215 at the Ashland Spring Invitational.
Two rounds of stroke play will be played on Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18. Round of 32 match play will be played on Monday, May 19. Round of 16 match play and quarterfinal matches will be held on Tuesday, May 20. The semifinals and championship match are scheduled for Wednesday, May 21.
In four-ball (also known as best-ball), both players on a team play their own ball from tee to hole. The team's score for each hole is the lower score of the two players. Players will make decisions based on their teammates' situation. For example, if the first player hits the ball into trouble off the tee, the second to play will need to be more conservative and make sure to hit the fairway. Players can be more aggressive with their shots if they know their teammate is in a good position.
