Rockets Drop Doubleheader to Akron

Kendra VanderLugt goes 4-for-4 and homers twice in game one

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo softball team dropped its doubleheader to Akron on Saturday afternoon. The Zips tallied 12-7 and 8-2 wins during the twin bill at Scott Park.

The Rockets tallied 12 hits in game one but it wasn't enough. It was the 11th time that UT has registered 10 or more hits this season. Senior Kendra VanderLugt went 4-for-4 at the plate and blasted two homers for her second multi-homer game of the year.

Freshmen Audrey Miller and Samantha Bolding also blasted home runs in game one, bringing their season totals to a team-best seven dingers. In game two, Miller and Bolding collected RBI singles to account for the Rockets' scoring.

How It Happened

Game 1
  • Akron scored four runs in the first inning with a home run and a groundout, 4-0. Toledo cut the lead to 4-1 with a solo homer from Kendra VanderLugt in the bottom of the frame.
  • VanderLugt and Audrey Miller blasted back-to-back home runs in the third to bring the Rockets within two, 5-3.
  • A two-run single from McKay put Toledo within one, 6-5, but the Zips added runs in the sixth and seventh to get extend the lead, 12-5.
  • Samantha Bolding knocked out a solo shot to center for the final scoring of the game.
Game 2
  • Akron got on the board first, 2-0, with a double. Toledo evened the contest in the bottom of the frame with RBI singles from Miller and Bolding.
  • The Rockets were held scoreless the rest of the game while the Zips added four insurance runs in the third to take the series win.
Up Next
Toledo will head to Miami for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 1. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
