Matias Olivero named Singles Player of the Week; Hanamichi Carvajal and Poonthong Komolpisut claim Doubles Team of the Week
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team swept Mid-American Conference weekly honors on Monday. Junior Matias Olivero was named Singles Player of the Week, while Hanamichi Carvajal and Poonthong Komolpisut were tabbed Doubles Team of the Week after the Rockets claimed a 4-3 win over No. 70 Buffalo on Saturday.
Olivero recorded a comeback 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 7-5 win in the decisive third set on the No. 3 singles court to help Toledo clinch its first conference win of the season. Olivero faced a 5-1 deficit in the third set and came back to tie the set, 5-5. The junior tallied a 7-5 win to claim match point. The Santiago, Chile native is 3-0 in conference matches and has recorded six-straight singles wins.
Carvajal and Komolpisut earned a 7-6 (7-5) win on the No. 1 doubles court to help the Rockets clinch the doubles point against Buffalo. The duo went to a tiebreaker and earned the point to put Toledo ahead, 1-0, early in the match. Carvajal and Komolpisut are 1-0 as a doubles pair and helped the Rockets clinch their first MAC win of the season.
This is Olivero and Komolpisut's second weekly honor of the season and Carvajal's first award of the year.
Toledo hosts UIC on Thursday, March 20 and Northern Illinois on Saturday. March 22. Both matches are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at either Shadow Valley Tennis Club (indoors) or UT Varsity Tennis Courts (outdoor), weather depending.
