Mercy Kinyanjui Breaks School Record in 3000m at the Penn State National Open

Alex Bauer's time of 9:23.57 ranks as fifth-best 3000m time in school history

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Redshirt freshman Mercy Kinyanjui broke the 3000m school record with a time of 9:07.85 on Saturday at the Penn State National Open in University Park, Pa. Kinyanjui, who finished third in the race, bested teammate Laura Nicholson's school record of 9:13.54 that was set in December.

Senior Alex Bauer finished two places behind Kinyanjui in the 3000m, recording a time of 9:23.57, the fifth-fastest time in program history. Sophomore Lianna Surtz took 14th overall with a time of 9:32.55 while freshman Gabby Phelan crossed the finish line at 9:47.64.

Two members of the men's squad competed. Joad Martinho placed fifth in the 3000m invitational with a time of 8:08.37 while Joshuah Taylor took fifth in the open 3000m with a time of 8:23.26.

Toledo will compete at the Michigan Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 8 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
