Carruthers sets new scoring high with Toledo as Rockets earn back-to-back wins
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team earned a strong start to the month of December, taking down Morgan State, 79-66 behind 27 points from Kendall Carruthers at Savage Arena on Tuesday.
Â
The Rockets (3-3) used a late first-quarter run to grab a 23-14 lead, and extended that margin to double digits by halftime. The Bears (1-9) pulled to within eight in the second half, but wouldn't get any closer as the Rockets won the fourth quarter to put away the victory. The victory gives Toledo back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Â
Toledo poured in baskets from the paint, out-scoring the Lady Bears, 52-36 in the paint. The Rockets also dominated the glass, winning the rebound battle, 44-30 to earn a 20-9 advantage in second chance points.
Â
Carruthers' 27 points were her most in 39 games in a Toledo uniform and was five away from her career high of 32, set on Feb. 15, 2024 against Wagner while playing with St. Francis. She made 10 field goals, just one away from matching her career best.
Â
Quoting Head Coach Ginny Boggess
"Proud of our team and our resiliency against a scrappy Morgan State squad. Very balanced effort across the board. We challenged Kendall Carruthers to take more shots for us this week and she was extremely efficient tonight. I was pleased with our defensive effort, but we have to clean up our middle-third ball screen from the third quarter. That's something we'll continue to work on and grow with our three new post players. Really proud of our effort and thank you to everyone that came out on a wintery night."
