Junior Sonny Wilson leads Rockets with career-high 29 points
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Junior Sonny Wilson scored a career-high 29 points on Tuesday night in the Toledo men's basketball team's 92-69 defeat at No. 9 Michigan State in the sold-out Breslin Center.
Wilson shot 10-of-15 from the floor, dished out a team-high five assists and grabbed a career-best four steals. Freshman Leroy Blyden Jr. finished with 10 points and was the only other Rocket to score in double digits.
Senior Jaxon Kohler led Michigan State with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Jeremy Fears, who leads the nation in assists, also contributed 15 points and eight assists for the Spartans.
The Rockets committed a season-low four turnovers but were out-rebounded by a 54-24 margin. Junior Austin Parks paced the Rockets with nine boards.
Toledo shot 35.9% from the field and knocked down 10-of-27 (37.0%) three-point field-goal attempts. MSU posted a 60.7 FG% and converted 10-of-23 (43.5%) of its shots behind the three-point arc.
The Spartans ended the half with an 11-0 run to take a 58-28 lead at intermission. Toledo out-scored MSU in the second half by a 41-34 margin.
QUOTING HEAD COACH TOD KOWALCZYK
"I'm really disappointed on how we played in the first half. I didn't think we competed the way we're capable of. Maybe our guys gave too much respect to the opponent. Michigan State is so good in transition. They're elite rebounders, they're deep, and when they make shots like they did tonight they're hard to beat. I'm happy for Sonny Wilson. He's a Pontiac guy who played at Detroit Jesuit. He deserved to play well on a big stage and prove he's a really good player. I thought his leadership tonight was outstanding."
