Jessica Costlow tallies career-high 22 kills to lead Rockets in rally over RedHawks
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Freshman Jessica Costlow recorded a career-high 22 kills as the No. 4 seeded Toledo women's volleyball team rallied to defeat No. 5 seeded Miami in a 3-2 battle (21-25, 25-14, 19-25, 25-23, 15-11) on Friday evening in Bowling Green, Ohio. The match saw 21 ties and 10 lead changes.
The win marks the seventh time that UT has advanced to the Mid-American Conference Tournament Semifinals in program history and is second time in three years. The Rockets last appeared in the semifinals in 2023.
The Rockets move to 21-10 overall on the season. This is the first time the Rockets have totaled 21 or more wins since 1983 (27-16).
Costlow led the offense with 22 kills on a .346 clip to go along with 15 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Sophomore Olivia Heitkamp tallied 13 terminations while redshirt sophomore Sierra Pertzborn poured in 11 kills and three blocks.
Senior setter Kelsey Smith totaled 50 assists and 19 digs for her 15th double-double this season while also chipping in eight kills. Sophomore libero Grace Freiberger had a team-high 28 digs while junior Avery Adamski chipped in 14 digs.
The Rockets totaled 10 blocks, marking their 12th contest this season with double-figure blocks.

Key Moments
- Back-to-back kills from Sierra Pertzborn and Kelsey Smith gave Toledo an early lead in the first set, 6-4. Miami responded with an 8-1 run to jump out in front, 12-7. The RedHawks extended their lead to six with a kill, 16-10, before UT used kills from Olivia Heitkamp and Pertzborn to cut the lead to four, 20-16. Miami reached set point thanks to a UT error, 24-19. The Rockets fired off two kills to get within three, 24-21, but Miami won on a service error.
- Two kills and a block from Pertzborn put UT in front to start the second set, 4-2. Three straight points from the RedHawks evened the frame, 6-6, but the Rockets fired off a 5-1 run to take a 12-8 advantage. Two kills from Jessica Costlow extended UT's lead to seven, 17-10, and a termination from Smith and Miami error kept the Rockets in front, 22-13. Iremnur Elmas fired off an ace to win the set and even the match.
- Miami jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in the third set. An ace from Smith put UT within three, 12-9, before the RedHawks took a 17-14 lead with a kill. Coslow got the Rockets within two, 17-15, but Miami responded with three kills and a block to extend their advantage, 21-15. MU reached set point with a kill, 24-16, and UT tallied three quick points to get within five, 24-19, before the RedHawks took the set win on a kill.
- The RedHawks took a quick 4-1 advantage to start the fourth set. Costlow tallied a solo block to even the set, 4-4, while a kill from Smith and ace from Avery Adamski put UT in front, 7-4. Catalano tallied a kill to keep UT ahead by three, 14-11, before Miami strung together a 4-0 run to retake the lead, 17-15. Olivia Heitkamp buried a kill to give Toledo the advantage, 20-19, and both teams traded points. Back-to-back kills from Costlow gave UT the set victory and forced the decisive fifth set.
- Miami used two kills and an ace to take a 6-2 lead in the fifth set. The Rockets fired off three-straight points to tie the match, 7-7, and both sides traded points. Two straight kills from Costlow put Toledo at match point, 24-11. The freshman ended the match firing off three-straight kills to earn the match win.
