Scholten will represent Toledo at the ITA Conference Master’s Tournament in San Diego

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Toledo sophomore JJ Scholten won the Mid-American Conference Individual Tennis Singles Championship in Kalamazoo, Mich. on Sunday afternoon. Scholten tallied a 6-1, 6-1 win over freshman teammate Isabella Barretto.

With today's win, Scholten will represent Toledo and the Mid-American Conference at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Conference Masters Tournament in San Diego, Calif. on Nov. 6-9.

Scholten won four singles matchups this weekend against conference opponents, posting straight set victories over Northern Illinois's Theodora Kousius and Bowling Green's Tia Clemens. She also earned a win over Ball State's Sarah Shahbaz who retired.

Freshman Isabella Barretto won her first matchups against MAC competition, earning singles wins over opponents from Eastern Michigan, UMass and Buffalo. She won three-straight matches to compete against her teammate Scholten in the championship match.

In doubles play, freshmen Anastasia Akuginova and Barretto teamed up to earn a win over Eastern Michigan's Lara Diaz Zayas and Pehal Kharadkar. The duo then fell to Esme Andresen and Maria Glowacka.

Scholten paired with sophomore Neha Guru in doubles play, advancing to the quarterfinals with a win over Buffalo's Sarah Hartel and Deanne Choo before falling to Miami's Malu Oliveira and Allie Faulkner.

Toledo will continue fall competition by hosting the Rocket Invitational on Friday, Oct. 10-Saturday, Oct. 11 at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.
