Toledo defensive end and punt returner earn national recognition following award-winning 2025 seasons
TOLEDO, Ohio — University of Toledo defensive end Andrew Zock and punt returner Bryson Hammer have been named HERO Sports Preseason Group of Six Third-Team All-Americans.Â
Â
Zock enters his first season with the Rockets following a dominant sophomore campaign in 2025 at Mercer, where he established himself as one of the most disruptive defensive players in college football. The Citra, Fla. native recorded 46 tackles, including 20 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 23 quarterback hurries.
Â
Zock won the 2025 Buck Buchanan Award, presented annually to the top defensive player in the FCS. He was named First-Team All-Southern Conference after previously being named the SoCon Freshman of the Year and an FCS Freshman All-American in 2024.
Â
In two seasons, Hammer is already a two-time All-MAC specialist. Last season, he led the conference with 362 punt return yards and ranked 15th nationally with 12.1 yards per return.Â
Â
"Andrew and Bryson both bring tremendous talent and playmaking ability to our football team," said Toledo head coach Mike Jacobs. "Andrew has proven himself as one of the most impactful defensive players in the country, and Bryson has the ability to change a game every time he touches the football. We're excited about what both of them can bring to the Rockets this season, and we're proud to see them recognized nationally."
Â
In two seasons at Mercer, Zock totaled 79 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss and 18.5 sacks. He was part of the No. 1 transfer class in the Mid-American Conference, according to 247Sports.
Â
Toledo opens the season at Michigan State on Friday, Sept. 4 at 8 p.m. on FS1. The Rockets' home opener – "The Biggest Party in Toledo" – against Central Connecticut State is set for Saturday, Sept. 12 at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
