Brian Wright Introduced as Toledo’s Head Women’s Volleyball Coach

Wright officially takes over as the eighth head coach in Toledo Women’s Volleyball history

TOLEDO, Ohio – Brian Wright was officially introduced as the University of Toledo's head women's volleyball coach at a press conference in Savage Arena on Thursday afternoon.

Wright is the eighth women's volleyball head coach in program history and comes to Toledo following stops as an assistant coach at Ohio State, TCU and Texas. He has also coached at the club level, helping his teams qualify to the USA Junior Nationals 14 times and winning three national qualifiers. Wright has also served as a head coach and assistant coach on various USA Volleyball and National Team Development Programs (NTDP).

"I wanted to find a place where I can grow the program and do more with the program, but I wanted to be a part of something bigger," said Wright. "I wanted to be a part of a university that wants to grow and a community that wants to grow and get better at volleyball. That is Toledo. I think we can do something really special here and make Toledo a volleyball city and a volleyball school. I know with the time we put in, we can get the program there.

"It's the right time for volleyball to take the next steps.This city has the ability to support women's sports, and for three and a half months we are playing in Savage Arena. We'll play good volleyball and have a lot of fun doing it. We will have a great team to watch and will put on the best game-day environment in the MAC. We can't wait to get in front of our fans."

Vice President and Director of Athletics Bryan B. Blair noted Wright's impressive coaching record in the landscape of college and club volleyball, as well as his elite recruiting efforts made him an ideal candidate to continue the growth of Toledo volleyball.

"From our first conversation, it was clear that Brian shares our vision for Toledo volleyball and how it may positively impact our University and Northwest Ohio community," Blair said. "He has a passion for developing young people, growing the game of volleyball and a burning desire to be a Toledo Rocket. The popularity of women's volleyball is growing at a breakneck pace. The future of Toledo volleyball is equally as bright with Brian as our new leader."

Before coming to Toledo, Wright spent 17 seasons coaching at the NCAA Division I level and has been on the sidelines for 13 NCAA Tournaments. He has been to 10 Sweet Sixteens, eight Elite Eights and six Final Fours and, and was part of the 2012 NCAA Championship team at Texas. 

Wright helped coach 36 student-athletes to All-America selections, including five AVCA All-Americans in his time at Ohio State. Additionally, Wright oversaw 19 athletes who earned All-Big Ten postseason selections highlighted by the 2022 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, 2022 Big Ten Setter of the Year and 2020 Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
