WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Senior
Barend Botha is tied for 57
th place after shooting a seven-over par 79 in the second round of the 2024 NCAA West Lafayette Regional at the par-72, 7,461-yard Kampen Course at Purdue's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex on Tuesday.
Botha struggled through the majority of his round after being hampered by a stomach illness. He shot four-over on the front nine and was hurt even more by a six-over three-hole stretch after making the turn. Botha registered a triple bogey on No. 10, a bogey on No. 11 and a double bogey on No. 12 before regrouping by collecting three straight birdies on 14, 15 and 16 to close his round with some momentum.
"Barend woke up this morning around 5:00 a.m. feeling pretty poorly with a bug that may have been food poisoning," Head Coach
Jeff Roope said. "He really fought just to stay upright for the first 8-10 holes and then thankfully started feeling better after a couple visits with the athletic trainer and medical staff. He showed character down the stretch being able to string some good holes together. Hopefully he can just have a great day tomorrow and finish on a high note."
Vanderbilt leads the 13-team field at 16-under par 560 with Purdue (561, -15) just one stroke behind the Commodores. Arizona (567, -9), New Mexico (573, -3) and Florida (574, -2) round out the top five.
The top five teams plus one individual not on an advancing team will advance to the NCAA Championships at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. on May 24-29.
Botha will tee off in tomorrow's third and final round at 10:34 a.m.
