Toledo takes its second matchup vs. UIC on Friday
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team opened the weekend with its second win over UIC on Friday evening, with freshman Poonthong Komolpisut clinching match point in the 6-1 final from Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
The Rockets (10-10, 5-3 MAC) defeated the Flames 4-3 on March 22.
UT took a 1-0 match lead after winning the doubles point from the No. 1 and 3 courts, and senior Pawit Sornlaksup secured UT's first singles win in two sets from the top court. Freshman Cole Cozens took two sets from Edoardo Bottino at the No. 4 spot to set up Komolpisut's clincher at the No. 5 court.
Artem Iermolov won in three sets at the No.6 spot, which would be UIC's only win of the afternoon. Junior Hanamichi Carvajal dropped his first set 7-6(5) to Edoardo Bottino, fought back in the second set 7-6(5) to force a super tiebreaker, and took the match 10-7 from the No. 3 court.
In the longest match of the afternoon, senior Marko Galic went to three tiebreakers with Robinson Le Meur at the No. 2 court. Galic won the opening set 7-6(7), fell 7-6(6) in the second, and ended the match with a 10-7 super tiebreaker in a match that took over two-and-half hours.
After tonight, Sornlaksup takes over the No. 3 spot in program history with his 73rd career singles win and also moves up to No. 5 all-time with 121 combined wins.
Toledo will play conference leader Northern Illinois (17-3, 6-1 MAC) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
