TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo softball team swept its home opener doubleheader vs. Ball State on Friday, taking the opener 7-3 and the nightcap 2-1. The Rockets have now won five straight MAC games and move to 6-2 in league play. Toledo has also won their home opener in each of head coach
Jessica Bracamonte's first two seasons.
Toledo received complete-game efforts from both juniors
Kylee Graham (5-5) and
Sophia Knight (10-5). Graham struck out three and gave up seven hits in the opening win, while Knight also struck out three batters while allowing just one run scored in the nightcap victory.
In Game One, the Rockets got off to a hot start with three runs in the first inning. Ball State closed the gap to 3-2 in the second, but UT separated itself with another three runs in the third and a solo score in the fifth to make it 7-2. The Cardinals crossed home once more in the sixth but could not make up the four-run deficit.
BSU flipped the script in Game Two, scoring first and taking a 1-0Â lead until senior
Jenna Kroll hit an RBI single in the fourth to tie the game 1-1. Toledo took the lead off a sac fly from
Madison Mikulski in the fifth to make it 2-1, which held up as the deciding run and capping the doubleheader sweep.
Junior
Sidney Griffith paced the offense with four hits on the day, while seniors
Lauren Erickson and
Emily Bracamonte drove in two runs each. Bracamonte hit her first collegiate triple while Kroll recorded her 100
th career RBI in the nightcap to remain in the No. 4 spot in UT history.
Toledo (15-13, 6-2 MAC) and Ball State (15-19, 2-6 MAC) will close out this home series on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1 – Toledo 7, Ball State 3
- The Rockets plated three runs in the first on two fielders' choices and an RBI single from Riley Mohr to take a 3-0 lead.
- Ball State knocked in two runs on a double and a triple to make it 3-2 in the second.
- Toledo scored three runs on three hits to extend its lead to 6-2 in the third.
- Emily Bracamonte's sac fly to right field plated another run for the Rockets in the fifth.
- BSU scored on an error and threatened to add to its total with bases loaded and two outs but the inning ended on a routine groundout.
- The Cardinals put two runners with one out in the seventh, but Graham got the final two batters out to end the game.
Game 2 – Toledo 2, Ball State 1
- Samantha-Jo Mata hit a sac fly to right field to get BSU on the board 1-0 in the second.
- Jenna Kroll's RBI single to left field tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth.
- Madison Mikulski's sac fly in the fifth gave UT its first lead, 2-1.
- Ball State put the lead-off batter on in the seventh but Knight shut the door on the rally buy putting the next three batters down in order.
