BUFFALO, N.Y. – Freshman
Sonny Wilson tallied a season-high 20 points and nine rebounds as all five Rocket starters scored in double figures in the Toledo men's basketball team's 85-79 road triumph over Buffalo (4-25, 2-14 MAC). The victory for the Rockets (18-11, 12-4 MAC) was their seventh straight over the Bulls and fourth in a row in Alumni Arena.
"This was a huge win for us for so many reasons," Head Coach
Tod Kowalczyk said. "We were coming off a tough loss to Northern Illinois and came out aggressive and confident. We were also able to grind it out and come away with a win in a game we didn't make shots."
Junior
Tyler Cochran scored 18 points and dished out a team-high five assists, while junior
Dante Maddox Jr. added 17 points. Redshirt freshman
Javan Simmons added 14 points, with junior
Ra'Heim Moss contributing 11 points and seven boards.
Senior Sy Chatman led Buffalo with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
The Rockets shot just 43.1% from the field but knocked down 27-of-30 (90.0%) free-throw attempts.
Toledo held a 36-33 advantage in the rebounding department and also forced Buffalo to commit 17 miscues leading to a 24-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Rockets will head to Oxford, Ohio to face Miami (15-14, 9-7 MAC) in their final road game of the season. Tip-off time vs the RedHawks is set for 7:00 p.m. with streaming on ESPN+.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
- The first half was tight throughout and included eight times when the score was tied and four lead changes.
- Toledo took a 13-9 advantage at the 14:01 mark following four straight points from Javan Simmons.
- The Rockets then went on a 6-0 spurt to take its largest lead of the half, 19-13, following a Tyler Cochran basket with 10:25 left.
- UT continued to lead until Isaiah Adams slammed one home to put the Bulls up 31-29 4:47 before halftime.
- Dante Maddox Jr.'s two free throws four seconds before halftime gave Toledo a 37-33 lead.
SECOND HALF
- Cochran put Toledo up 43-37 with a layup less than two minutes after the break.
- Sonny Wilson then scored five points during a 12-0 spurt that gave Toledo a 61-48 cushion with nine minutes left.
- Buffalo closed its deficit to 63-58 just over three minutes later, but UT answered with six straight points to regain a double-digit advantage.
- The Rockets' lead stayed at five points or larger during the final five minutes.
