Laura Nicholson, Vilde Henriksen, and Mercy Kinyanjui record impressive times on Friday night
BOSTON, Mass. – Graduate Student Laura Nicholson and senior Vilde Henriksen set two Toledo records in the mile and 3,000m races on the opening day of Boston's David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Friday. Nicholson won her heat in the mile with a time of 4:34.35, while Henriksen recorded a time of 9:13.62 in the 3,000m race.Â
Nicholson ran two seconds faster than her personal best, at 4:34.35 to replace the previous school record of 4:34.59 that Petronela Simiuc set at the 2020 David Hemery Valentine Invitational.Â
Henriksen led the pack in the 3,000m race with a 9:13.62, the fastest time by a Rocket so far this year. Her time crushed the previous UT record of 9:16.87 set by senior Madeline Vining at the 2023 John Thomas Terrier Classic.Â
Henriksen was followed by freshman Mercy Kinyanjui who ran a 9:21.61 (47th place), which is now the second-fastest time by a Rocket in school history.
Sophomore Lianna Surtz, beat her previous PR by five seconds for a time of 9:30.80 (69th place), and freshman Melody Jebiwot crossed the line at 9:34.06 (81st place), both in their first 3,000m attempt this season. Junior Morgan Hicks also had a large time cut in the race, trimming five seconds off her best time to finish at 9:37.60 (97th place) and finishing in the top 100.
Seniors Madeline Vining (9:39.98) and Emily Vining (9:47.09) rounded out the team, finishing eight seconds apart in the 3000m. Sophomore Marina Gross ran a 10:01.1 in the unseeded 3,000m race on Friday morning.
Toledo will head back to Ann Arbor one more time this season to compete at Michigan's Silverston Invitational on Friday, Feb. 16. The Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships will take place the following weekend (Feb. 23-24) in Ypsilanti, Mich.
