Rocket Spotlight on...Marko Galic

On adjusting to life in the United States, transferring to Toledo and helping the Rockets win another MAC Championship

2/6/2024 1:00:00 PM

Men's Tennis player Marko Galic received his bachelor's degree in University Studies in May of 2023 and is currently working towards earning a master's degree in marketing. He is the team's No. 2 singles player and was an integral player in the Rockets' Mid-American Conference Championship and Tournament run in 2023.

On his tennis origins and adjusting to life in the United States

I have two older brothers and I started playing tennis because of them. My older friends had always said good things about college tennis, so I started looking at schools and preparing myself for it. Moving away from my family was a big thing, but I worked hard for it. Tennis is an individual sport so how good you are is how good of a recruit you are going to be.

I am the first person out of my family to play college tennis and I had to make a lot of adjustments when I first got here. A lot of things were different – different thinking, different habits, different views on life. I've been here for five years now so I'm used to the culture.

On his first two years at Incarnate Word and transferring to Toledo

My first season at Incarnate Word got cut short because of COVID. We had one semester where we practiced and played without COVID and that was a great experience. I learned a lot from the other players and the coach. After my first two years, I became a better player. I decided I wanted to play for a better program with a better schedule and help me become a better player. I wanted to be part of a team where I could contribute more to make it better.

I found Toledo because of Adam Kovac. I'm from Croatia and he's from Serbia, and we played in a few of the same tournaments back when we were in the Under 16 and U18. I had seen him a few times, introduced myself, and we became good friends. I also knew a few guys who had graduated from UT before I came over to the U.S. and they said great things about Toledo. I had to adapt to more than just tennis; I had to adjust to being a part of a new team, a new coach, and a new college.

On winning the MAC Championship in 2023
Winning the Mid-American Conference Championship was the best experience of my life so far. Since we had four seniors on the team, and I lived with the four of them we enjoyed the last few months before they left. Winning the MAC championship was like a gift from me to them and gifts from them to me since I won't see them that often anymore. I was sad after they graduated but would have been even more sad if we lost.

On competing at the NCAA tournament for the first time

It was good to play against Michigan. We had a team meeting before the match, and we were told to enjoy it as much as we could because it could have been our last match. We told each other that we needed to enjoy it and not stress.

On his decision to play a fifth year at Toledo

I decided to come back because I still had eligibility for one more year along with my studies. It was an option and of course, I took it. I think it will be valuable because I still bring value to the team and continue to study something that I like. It was an easy decision for me.

On his fondest memory at UT and optimism for the rest of the season

By far, my favorite memory is winning the MAC. I have a lot of good smaller memories but winning the MAC with the nine of us was by far the best experience. This year I am looking forward to winning the MAC again. I think we are the favorites. The other teams in the MAC know we have very strong players, so everybody is going to aim for us. I think we have a high chance of winning it all. We are confident if we play our best tennis no one can stand against us.
