Toledo Drops Three-Set Match to Ball State

Izzy Granger leads the Rockets with 11 kills

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's volleyball team fell to Ball State, 3-0 (23-25, 14-25, 19-25) on Friday night. The loss moved Toledo (15-12, 8-7 MAC) into seventh place in the Mid-American Conference standings.

Junior outside hitter Izzy Granger led the offense for the Rockets with 11 kills, four of which came in the third set. Granger tallied her 17th match with double figure kills during the 2024 campaign. Freshman outside hitter Olivia Heitkamp added six kills of her own while chipping in three blocks.

Freshman libero Grace Freiberger tallied 20 digs, her 24th match this season with 10-plus digs. Sophomore setter Macy Hatkevich had 23 assists to go along with six digs, three blocks and a service ace. Redshirt freshman middle blocker Sierra Pertzborn recorded a team-high six blocks, moving her season total to 104.

"Hats off to Ball State," said Head Coach Jason Oliver. "Their ball control was off the charts tonight. We had our opportunities to get to them, but it did not last very long due to their good ball control. We know what to do and we will make adjustments needed for a better result."

Ball State (17-8, 10-4 MAC) was led by Carson Tyler with 11 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE (25-23 Ball State)
  • Ball state jumped out to an early three-point lead, 6-3, behind a handful of kills.
  • Toledo tied the match, 66, thanks to kills from Anna Alford and Olivia Heitkamp. The Rockets rattled off kills from Macy Hatkevich and a block from Hatkevich and Sierra Pertzborn to take a slight lead, 13-10.
  • The Cardinals used a 4-0 run to regain the lead, 19-15.
  • A service ace from Taylor Alt and kill from Izzy Granger kept the Rockets within one, but Ball State secured the set win with a kill.
SET TWO (25-14 Ball State)
  • Both teams traded points early on in the set, but a 5-0 surge by the Cardinals put the visitors in front, 11-5.
  • Toledo cut the lead to four, 12-8, behind a kill from Caylee Sharkey.
  • Another four-point run for the Cardinals put them in control of the set, 20-11, and secure the set victory with another 4-0 run.
SET THREE (25-19 Ball State)
  • The Rockets took a quick 5-3 lead thanks to kills from Hatkevich and Alt.
  • A 6-1 run from Ball State put the Cardinals ahead, 9-6.
  • A solo block from Heitkamp and an ace from Hatkevich kept the Rockets within one, 12-11.
  • Three straight terminations from the Cardinals put Ball State in front, 18-12.
  • Toledo cut the lead to three, 19-16, as Izzy Granger fired off four kills within five plays.
  • Ball State extended their lead, 24-18, behind a string of kills and errors. The Cardinals took the win off of a kill.
UP NEXT
Toledo will wrap up home play on Saturday, Nov. 9 against Ball State at 4:00 p.m.
