Rockets Take Down RedHawks on Friday Night, 3-1

Toledo wins second match of the week behind Taylor Alt’s 22 kills

TOLEDO, Ohio – Outside hitter Taylor Alt tallied a season-high 22 kills and 13 digs in a 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22) victory over Miami in a Mid-American Conference matchup in Savage Arena on Friday night. The win puts Toledo (15-8, 8-3 MAC) in third place in the league standings.

"It's always good to get two wins in a weekend, especially in the MAC," said Head Coach Jason Oliver. "I am happy for the team but know we need to get better this week as we continue league play."

Alt fired off 11 of her 22 kills in the fourth and final set of the match to help clinch the victory. Freshman outside hitter Olivia Heitkamp recorded a career-best 13 kills on a .321 clip to go along with three blocks. Junior outside hitter Izzy Granger added nine kills, eight digs and a team-best two service aces.

Sophomore setter Macy Hatkevich tallied 48 assists and 14 digs for her seventh double-double of the season and 16th of her career. Freshman libero Grace Freiberger led the team with 25 digs.

Miami (7-15, 1-10 MAC) was led by Chelsea Williams with 12 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE (25-23 Toledo)
  • Toledo took an early 7-2 lead off a block from Taylor Alt and Kayla Ozanich. Miami responded with a 5-1 run of their own to tie the set, 9-9.
  • A 9-2 surge by the Rockets, powered behind kills from Izzy Granger and Olivia Heitkamp, put Toledo back in front, 18-11.
  • The RedHawks got within three, 23-20, but a kill from Granger got Toledo to set point.
  • Miami rattled off three quick points to get within one, 24-23, but a kill from Granger claimed the first set win.
SET TWO (25-20 Toledo)
  • Both sides traded points, but five straight points from Toledo put the Rockets in front, 10-7.
  • Miami rattled off a kill and solo block to tie the set, 14-14. A kill from Sierra Pertzborn and block from Pertzborn and Heitkamp put Toledo back in front, 18-15.
  • The RedHawks got within three, 23-20, but two consecutive kills from Alt closed out the second set.
SET THREE (25-22 Miami)
  • Miami jumped out to an early 8-3 lead behind three kills and a service ace. Toledo fired off a 5-1 run, thanks to kills from Alt and a block from Heitkamp and Pertzborn, to tie the frame, 10-10.
  • Toledo took a 19-15 lead off a termination from Pertzborn, but Miami responded with a 6-0 run of their own to take a 21-19 lead.
  • A kill from Alt cut Miami's lead to one, 21-20, but four kills from the RedHawks gave them the set win.
SET FOUR (25-22 Toledo)
  • The RedHawks took a 7-4 lead off a block early in the set. The Rockets fired off three quick points to tie things at 7-7.
  • A kill from Alt and service ace from Macy Hatkevich put Toledo in front, 13-12.
  • An ace from Granger and termination from Alt kept the Rockets ahead, 22-17, but Miami put together five consecutive points to tie the set, 22-22.
  • Two kills from Alt followed by an ace from Avery Adamski gave Toledo the match victory.
  • 11 of Alt's 22 total kills came during the fourth set.
UP NEXT
Toledo heads to Kalazmoo, Mich. to take on Western Michigan on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 1-2. Both matches are set to start at 6:00 p.m. with coverage on ESPN+.
