Western Michigan scores twice in the second half to secure victory
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's soccer team fell to Western Michigan 2-0 as the Broncos netted a pair of second-half goals to secure the victory at Paul Hotmer Field on Thursday.
The Rockets (6-7-3, 3-4-2 MAC / 11 pts.) were able to hold the first-place Broncos off the scoreboard in the first half, but WMU (9-1-6, 6-0-3 / 21 pts.) capitalized on a Toledo red card late in the opening half and scored in the 58th and 83rd minutes.
Freshman goalkeeper Paige Dornheggen entered the game in the 37th minute and put up a strong season debut with six saves and a .750 save percentage. Toledo's offense managed three shots at even strength in the first half.
"I'm really proud of the effort," said Head Coach Mark Batman. "Playing a woman down against the leading team in the conference, I don't know if we give up those goals at even strength. Super proud of the group's effort. Now we have to go out and win the next two to give ourselves a great chance at making the MAC Tournament."
