Pawit Sornlaksup extends his singles winning streak to 45 matches

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Toledo men's tennis team did double damage in Indianapolis winning both matches of a doubleheader in Indianapolis, Ind. on Sunday. The Rockets started the day with a back-and-forth 4-3 triumph over Butler and capped the evening with a 5-0 victory over IUPU. With the victories, Toledo improves to 2-2 on the season.

"I'm really happy with how we battled today," head coach Al Wermer said. "We were 2-0 down to Butler and it took a full team effort to get back into the match and ultimately clinch it. We rotated our lineup a little for IUPUI. It's always good to build our depth. We have some work to do on doubles but overall it was a good weekend for us."

In the first match of the day, Butler (0-2) won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. No. 68 ranked Pawit Sornlaksup put his 44-match winning streak on the line as he took the top court against Butler's Alvaro Huete Vadillo. Sornlaksup trailed 2-1 early in the first set, then won five straight games to take the first set 6-2. He took the second set 6-2 to secure his 45^th straight victory and tie the match at 1-1.

Senior Marko Galic won his first match of the season, while junior Hanamichi Carvajal won his first in a UT uniform to tie the match at 3-3. Sophomore Matias Olivero delivered the clinching point for the Rockets from the No. 6 court and the first team win of the 2024 season.

Toledo closed out the weekend with a 5-0 sweep against IUPUI (1-3). UT got off to a good start, winning the doubles point from the top and bottom courts. The Rockets moved ahead 3-0 in the match after Cole Cozens (6-0, 6-4) and Carvajal (6-3, 6-0) won their respective courts. Charlie Snow and Olivero finished their matches at the same time to clinch the match at 5-0 and give Toledo its second win of the afternoon.

Sornlaksup's singles win against Butler is the 63^rd of his career and 45^th consecutive dual-match win since January of 2022, the longest winning streak in Toledo history. He has tied Chris Clark's (2005-08) for No. 5 on Toledo's all-time victory list and trails UT Hall of Famer Stjepan Sisko (2014-17) who won 65 singles matches in his career.

Toledo (2-2) has three tough road matches coming up next week, starting with No. 2 Ohio State (2-0) in Columbus on Jan. 24, and back-to-back matches at Penn State (1-0) on Jan. 26 and Temple (1-1) on Jan. 27 in University Park, Pa.
