First-Place Rockets Host Buffalo on Tuesday Night

Toledo in three-way tie at top of MAC with Akron and Western Michigan

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo men's basketball team (10-6, 4-0 MAC) looks to remain unbeaten in Mid-American Conference play and stay atop of the league standings when it hosts Buffalo (2-14, 1-3 MAC) on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+. The Rockets are currently in a three-way tie for first place in the MAC with Akron and Western Michigan and have won a conference-record 19 consecutive regular-season league contests.

Ra'Heim Moss and Dante Maddox Jr. combined for 45 points in Saturday's 77-72 home victory over Ball State. Moss topped the Rockets with a career-high 24 points, while Maddox added 21 to go along with a team-high seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. Javan Simmons also was in double figures with 12 points.

Toledo shot 44.3% from the field and 38.9% (7-of-18) from three-point range. Ball State converted at a 50.9% clip but committed 10 turnovers, five more than UT's season-low total of five miscues. The Rockets also owned a 34-28 advantage in the rebounding department and dominated the glass in the second half by a 21-12 margin.

Moss is leading UT offensively with a career-high scoring mark of 16.3 ppg. Maddox ranks second with a career-high 15.2 ppg, while Tyler Cochran is averaging 13.1 ppg, a team-high 6.1 rpg and a team-best 2.1 spg. Simmons is also averaging 12.0 ppg and is leading the team with a 58.5 FG% and 1.1 bpg.

Buffalo has lost its last three games since opening league play with a 76-64 win at Central Michigan. Redshirt senior Sy Chatman is tied for fifth in MAC scoring with 18.3 ppg and also ranks in the Top 10 with 1.5 bpg (3rd) and 6.6 rpg (7th).

Toledo has won its last five meetings against Buffalo following the Bulls' five-game win streak in the series from 2018-20.

POST TOUCHES
•  Junior Ra'Heim Moss has scored in double digits in 15 of 16 games this season after scoring in double digits on 13 occasions last year.  He has now scored in double digits 42 times in his Rocket career and is tied for third in the MAC with 1.6 spg.
•  Junior Dante Maddox Jr. ranks second in team scoring with a career-high 15.2 ppg. and has scored in double digits in a career-high TEN straight games.
•  Maddox grabbed a season-high seven rebounds and tied his career high with five assists in addition to scoring 21 points in Saturday's win over Ball State.
•  Junior Tyler Cochran leads the MAC with a team-high 2.1 spg. He also leads the team with 6.1 rpg and is shooting 58.1% from the field in league play.
•  Redshirt freshman Javan Simmons is fourth on the team with 12.0 ppg. He has scored in double digits in 13 games and has a team-high 58.5 FG% that is THIRD in the MAC.
•  Junior Andre Lorentsson ranks third in the MAC with a 45.0 3PTFG% (18-of-40). He scored a career-high 17 points (6-8 FG, 4-5 3FG) earlier this season vs. New Mexico (Nov. 21).
•  Freshman Sonny Wilson registered his fifth double-digit outing with 13 points at Kent State (Jan. 9). He also scored 13 points in UT's MAC opener at Ohio and leads the Rockets with a 2.2 A/TO ratio with just one turnover in his last five games.
  
TEAM TIDBITS
•  Toledo leads the MAC with 79.2 ppg, a 47.7 FG% and 7.6 spg and ranks second with a 37.4 three-point FG%, a 77.1 FT%, and a plus-2.25 turnover margin.
•  The Rockets rank 18th nationally with a 77.1 free-throw percentage. During Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk's 14-year tenure, UT has ranked in the Top 20 nationally in Toledo 2012-13 (8th), 2018-19 (12th), and 2020-21 (18th).
•  Toledo also ranks in the Top 50 nationally in two more categories - 39th in 3PTFG% (37.4) and 42nd in FTs made per game (16.4/game).
•  The Rockets' four leading scorers are also their top four free-throw shooters. Maddox leads UT at 81.0% and is followed by Simmons (80.4), Cochran (79.1) and Moss (77.9).
•  Saturday's win over Ball State gave UT a season-high four-game winning streak.
•  Toledo has held a rebounding advantage in three consecutive games.
•  Toledo is 3-0 in one-point games with road wins over Wright State and Oakland and a home victory over Marshall.
 
STREAKING IN THE MAC
• The Rockets have won a league-record 19 STRAIGHT conference games dating back to last season.
• TEN of the victories during the 19-game streak have come on the road.
• The Rockets' average margin of victory during the streak is 13.3 ppg.
• Toledo's last MAC loss was a 73-65 loss at Kent State on Jan. 10, 2023.
• UT's 4-0 start in MAC play is its best since winning six straight at the start of the 2020-21 season.
•   Toledo has had an eight-game overall win streak or longer in each of the last three years. UT registered a school-record 17-game winning streak last year, a nine-game unbeaten stretch in 2021-22 and an eight-game unblemished streak in 2020-21.
 
ON THE HORIZON
     Toledo will be on the road for its next two games at Central Michigan on Friday, Jan. 19 and Northern Illinois on Tuesday, Jan. 23.
