Rockets keep pace with some of the top-ranked women’s programs in the country on Friday morning in Chicago
CHICAGO, Ill. – Senior Vilde Henriksen led the Toledo women's cross country team to a ninth-place finish at Loyola's Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational on Friday morning. The Rockets finished behind four nationally ranked teams and three teams receiving votes. Henriksen finished 36th in her first race as a Rocket with a time of 20:36.0 in the 6K race. The Rockets finished behind four nationally ranked teams and three teams receiving votes.
Scoring for the Rockets with Henriksen were senior Madeline Vining (20:49.0) sophomore Lianna Surtz (20:52.7), junior Morgan Hicks (21:11.8), and junior Joy Chirchir (21:16.1)
Furman won the women's race. Toledo collected 255 team points, 48 points ahead of 10th-place Ohio and 77 points ahead of 11th-place finisher Indiana.
"It was a great job by Vilde in her first race in a Toledo uniform to lead us today," head coach Andrea-Grove McDonough said. "I was really proud of the team's fight in the last 1,000m of the race, and seeing some of the youngest runners step up. We've got a few weeks to get better and we will. Unfortunately, it was one of those days where everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. But that is the nature of sports."
In the Gold Division races, graduate student Laura Nicholson and sophomore Karina James made their season debuts. Nicholson powered through to cross the finish line at 21:07.0 and James rounded out the top 15 with a time of 21:37.3.
The women's team will next compete at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational on Friday, Oct. 13 in Madison, Wis.
