Sophomore Dennis Mutai finishes sixth in a pool of 138 runners on Friday
CHICAGO, Ill. – Sophomore Dennis Mutai led the Toledo men's cross country team to a 10th-place finish at Loyola's Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational on Friday morning. Mutai came in sixth with a time of 23:50.0 in the 8K race. The Rockets finished ahead of top regional opponents Indiana and Ohio State.
Also scoring for the Rockets were senior Benjamin Otis (46th/ 24:29.1), freshman Joad Martinho (62nd/24:40.9), senior Jake Rethman (68th/ 24:47.0), and senior Geoff Howles (75th/ 24:54.5).
Mutai, making his season debut, was four seconds off his PR of 23:46.3 and just three seconds shy of finishing in the top five. Martinho and senior Max Matolin made their Rocket debuts, with Matolin crossing the finish line at 25:56.7. Junior Sean Smith shaved off a whole minute off his previous PR (25:06.6).
"This may have been one of the best NCAA fields our men have ever faced," associate head cross country coach Tito Medrano said. "We did not shy away from the competition and competed well for this stage of the season, taking down some regionally ranked programs ahead of us like Indiana and Ohio State. We will continue to tread in the right direction as a complete team. Dennis ran an outstanding race individually, finishing around All-American caliber athletes. We so are very proud of his efforts as an opener."
No.4 ranked Wisconsin won the men's race with 49 team points. Toledo had 256 team points, four points ahead of 11th-place Indiana and 39 points in front of 13th-place Ohio State.
The Toledo men will next compete at the Falcon Invitational on Friday, Oct. 13 in Bowling Green, Ohio.
