TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team took the court for the first time together this fall in its annual Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational. Five Rockets combined in singles and doubles play for a 24-14 record, led by freshmen
Charlie Snow (6-2 overall record) and
Cole Cozens (5-1).
"I think this invitational was fairly productive for us because it's going to give us lots of information from live action," head coach
Al Wermer said. "We have a lot to work on but I know the motivation is through the roof."
On Friday afternoon, all three of Wermer's freshmen earned their first wins. Snow teamed up with senior
Marko Galic to win won back-to-back doubles matches vs. Kwanda Mblekwa and Malik Omarkhamov from the University of Northwest Ohio. Snow, who compiled a 4-1 doubles record in the tournament for the weekend, also went in 2-1 singles play, including a win vs. Emil Mikkelsen from the 2023 NCAA Division II Quarterfinals team Wayne State.Â
Freshman
Poonthong Komolpisut defeated UNOH's Sergio Conde in a two-set decision to start the tournament. Komolpisut ended the weekend 2-1 in singles play and 3-3 in doubles play.
Cozens fell 4-6 in his first set to Nils Messin, won the second set 6-2, and finished the superset on top 11-9 to earn the win. Cozens went undefeated (2-0) in singles play and had a 3-1 doubles record.
Cozens and Komolpisut were named to the all-tournament team.
Toledo went head-to-head in its home tournament with 2023 GLIAC Champions Wayne State, Marquette, Case Western Reserve, Tiffin, the University of Chicago, UNOH, and Holy Cross College (Ind.)
Seniors
Pawit Sornlaksup and
Adam Kovac were out of the lineup, as they were competing at the 47
th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
Up next on Toledo's schedule is the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, OK on Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 20-Oct. 8.
