Rockets will host their annual invitational to raise money for the American Cancer Society
TOLEDO, Ohio – The 2023 Mid-American Conference Champion Toledo Rockets will begin the fall portion of their 2023-24 schedule this Friday-Sunday, Sept. 22-24 with a part of competitions, one on the road and one at home. Seniors Pawit Sornlaksup and Adam Kovac will make the trip to the 47th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic in Milwaukee, Wisc., while the remainder of the team will compete in the annual Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational in Toledo, Ohio.
Sornlaksup and Kovac will face some of the top players in the region in Milwaukee. The pair will face singles and doubles team against players from Mississippi State, Virginia Commonwealth University, Denver, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Yale, Southern Methodist, Western Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Illinois, and Navy.
"A prestigious national event is just what Pawit and Adam need," head coach Al Wermer said. "But it's not something that will intimidate them. They'll embrace the opportunity."
The Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational is held to recognize those who have battled cancer and to help support the American Cancer Society fundraising efforts. Participating teams, coaches, athletes, and fans who attend the matches and make a donation will receive a HOPE bracelet. To donate, follow this link.
"Our goal is to honor and recognize those who have battled or are battling cancer, and we're asking all college tennis fans to donate at least $25 this weekend for this cause," Wermer added.
This weekend will be the first of seven tournaments the Rockets will be competing in this fall. Wermer, the 2023 MAC Men's Coach of the Year, returns for his 27th season along with two-time MAC Player of the Year Sornlaksup and two-time All-AMC honoree  Kovac. Sornlaksup, a senior, was recently ranked No. 80 in the ITA Preseason Rankings of the NCAA Division I Men's Singles Players. In addition to being named 2023 MAC Player of the Year, Sornlaksup made MAC All-Tournament Team and Tournament MVP, was the ITA Midwest Region Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award recipient, and earned six MAC Player of the Week recognitions. He also extended his winning streak to 43-straight singles matches and is 22-0 in league play since January of 2022.
Toledo is coming off one of its best seasons in program history, winning its eighth Mid-American Conference Championship, its first title since 1973, with an 18-6 overall mark and 8-2 league record. The Rockets made program history by playing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time.
Sornlaksup and Kovac are joined by senior Marko Galic and sophomore Matias Olivero, who were also  part of the historic 2023 team. Freshmen Cole Cozens, Poonthong Komolpisut, and Charlie Snow will compete in their first collegiate tournament this weekend.
Following this weekend, Toledo will end the month at the ITA All-American Championships (Sept. 30-Oct. 8).
