Rockets Host Three Teams in Toledo Invitational this Weekend

Virginia Tech, Memphis, and Youngstown State coming to Savage Arena

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's volleyball team plays its first home matches of the season this weekend at the three-day Toledo Invitational.

The Rockets welcome Virginia Tech, Memphis, and Youngstown State for a weekend of volleyball at Savage Arena. All six matches this weekend will be streamed live on ESPN+.

Last Time Out

Toledo opened the 2023 season last weekend in Winston-Salem at a tournament hosted by Wake Forest and came away with a win and a pair of losses.

On Friday, Toledo began the day with a marathon five-setter vs. Northeastern. After falling behind 2-1 in the match, UT won the fourth set and outlasted the Huskies in the fifth set to open the 2023 season with a 3-2 victory. In the nightcap, the Rockets hung tough vs. ACC opponent Wake Forest, but wasn't able to come away with a set vs. the tournament hosts, falling 3-0. UT ended the weekend with a loss against Grand Canyon on Saturday.

Rocket Notes

  • Taylor Alt tallied 22 kills in the season-opening win vs. Northeastern last weekend, the most kills by a MAC player in a match so far this season.
  • Alt enters the weekend with 1,271 career kills, fourth-most in program history. She is 221 kills away from moving into third place (DeSeana Williams, 1,491 kills, 1990-93).
  • Ryann Jaqua recently moved into second-place all-time in program history in career digs (1,750). She trails all-time leader and current assistant coach Maurissa Leonard (2,260, 2015-18) for the top spot.
  • Jaqua, who ranked third in the MAC and 20th in the nation in digs/set last season, averaged 4.55 digs/set last weekend.
  • Izzy Granger set career highs in kills (17) and digs (19) against Northeastern while recorded the first double-double of her career.

Scouting the Competition

Youngstown State: The Penguins opened up their season at home last week and went 1-2, their lone win coming against Canisius. Youngstown State returns two all-league performers from a year ago in Josi Borum (Second-Team All-Horizon League) and Abbie Householder (Horizona League All-Freshman Team). A setter and right-side hitter, Borum led the country last season with 10 triple-doubles.

Virginia Tech: Virginia Tech went 3-0 at home last weekend, defeating Morgan State, Quinnipiac, and Furman. The Hokies swept all three matches and held their opponents to a .056 cumulative attack percentage. Elayna Duprey averaged a team-best 3.43 kills/set.

Memphis: Memphis went 2-1 last week, its lone loss coming to MAC foe Miami. The Tigers were picked to win their division prior to the start of the season and Bailey Houlihan was named preseason all-conference. She averaged 5.04 digs/set last year and was a second-team all-conference pick.
